Here is a
list of classes VOICES will be offering during our Fall 2008 and
Spring 2009! Although some classes will be available by audition
only, no previous experience is required to participate in any of
our classes.
Class Descriptions (FALL 2008/SPRING 2009)
A CAPPELLA ENSEMBLE
(ages 13 & up)
This class, available by audition only, will be comprised of a small
group of dedicated students under the guidance of VOICES Director
Satyam Patel. Students will learn and prepare several types of a
cappella favorites, from gospel to R&B to pop. The tight harmonies
and full, rich chords that make a cappella compositions both
difficult and achingly beautiful will be showcased through various
performance opportunities around the valley.
BEGINNING ACTING
(not currently offered)
In beginning acting, students explore movement, vocalization,
character development and ensemble building. Through games and
exercises, students begin to develop the acting skills needed to
create believable characters, in which they may participate in an
end of session show for an invited audience.
BROADWAY "SHOWSTOPPERS" CHOIR (ages 12 & up)
Broadway has
spanned the ages and generations of time, there is no doubt you can
hum a Broadway tune at this moment! Join the Broadway
showstoppers choir to learn about musical theatre past and present,
sing some tunes with your friends, and have a great time!
BROADWAY WORKSHOP
(ages 16 & up)
Aimed at older teens and adults with a love for the Broadway hits,
this fun and fast paced workshop will give students the chance to
perform Broadway tunes and prepare scenes from current and past
Broadway shows.
CLASSICAL "CHORALIERS" CHOIR (ages 13 & up)
Mozart, Handel, Bach, Beethoven, Pachelbel, and others . . .
Each composer wrote music intended to be sung across the decades!
In this NEW VOICES choir, we will learn about the history and
significance of 7-10 great classical works as we prepare them for
performance. Come and sing with the choraliers!
CONNECTING VOICES
(ages 10-18)
VOICES is excited to announce the creation of our very first news
team!!! We are looking for volunteers to help us behind the scenes
as well as in front of the camera! Together, we will create a news
show twice a month to be played in the VOICES lobby filled with
interviews of local celebrities as well as upcoming events that will
be taking place here at VOICES and in the community! And, all
participating students will earn community service hours!
DISNEY CHOIR
(ages 5-7)
For the first time ever at VOICES, kids between the ages of
5 & 7 have the opportunity to be involved in a fun, hip choral
experience! As the name implies, we will focus on learning
songs from both Disney movies and contemporary Disney pop stars!
EAR TRAINING
(currently not offered)
Have you ever wanted to pick out a harmony to sing or play on a
song, but you weren’t sure how or where to begin? We have the
answer! Students will learn to recognize intervals – the building
blocks of ear training – through simple and fun exercises. This is a
great class for anyone who wants to sing backup vocals or learn to
hear their own part better in a group! So join the hundreds of
students who have taken this class and say that they can hear
better, sing better, and play better because of it.
GOSPEL CHOIR (ages 13 & up)
Being the foundation for many great artists, Gospel music connects people through the power of song! Think
Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurkin, and more. We will work on preparing several pieces to perform for our
holiday and spring showcases. No previous experience
necessary! The only requirement is that you "got soul!"
GUITAR
SYMPHONY
(ages 8-14)
Learn to read music easily in a group setting! Designed
specifically for beginning guitarists, we will go over simple
melodies and chords. Our goal is to supply you with the tools
needed to pick up any song and play it!! So, bring your guitar,
your friends, and get ready to rock!
JAZZ ENSEMBLE (ages 13 & up)
Jazz music is an exciting blend of set sound and "scat" (or
unplanned harmonies). In this NEW VOICES choir, we will
explore the world of Jazz music as it has been popularized over
time. Our choir will learn the tunes of well-known musicians
like Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Etta James and more!

KIDS SHOW CHOIR
(ages 6-8)
Let’s face it – some kids just LOVE to be the center of attention!
Well this is the choir for them! As a great first choir for 6 to 8 year
olds, kids will explore the basics of music and singing in a group
setting. Topics include diction, pitch, rhythm, and tempo. And
don’t forget the fun end-of-year performance, complete with choreography!
MAKIN' A SCENE!
(ages 10-15)
This
is a class to help teens prepare for auditions and nail the roles
once they’ve landed them! Teens will learn how to use their life
experiences to create meaningful characters and dramatic scenes, as
well as to explore comedic exercises, providing a well-rounded
acting experience.
MUSIC THEORY FROM A-G
(currently not offered)
This class offers great insight into the world of music as a
written language. This class is for all music lovers – musicians,
singers, songwriters, composers, etc. Beginning with the musical
alphabet and moving into intervals and then eventually to chord
progressions, students will be able read music by the time they have
completed this class.
PRE-TEENS ACTING
(ages 8-13)
Focus on what happens after you land that role... and how to create
a performance that will be unforgettable. Students will learn how to
properly warm-up their bodies and voices, and sharpen their focus. Theatrical games and exercises, scene work and discussion will give
students the tools to make a role their own.
PRE-TEENS POP CHORUS
(ages 9-12)
Similar to a show choir for older kids, this is a perfect group for
kids 9-12 years old - - beginners and more experienced singers
alike. Students will learn to harmonize, blend, and gel as a group
in a fun and supportive environment while learning contemporary
music like pop, Broadway and jazz. A fun end-of-year performance
will top off this great learning experience.
SONGWRITING
(currently not offered)
Express yourself through your own song! Topics will include
understanding song structure not as a limitation but as a vehicle of
creation, crafting strong rhythm in our lines, overcoming writer’s
block, creating memorable melodies, and seeing songs through from
inspiration to final draft. Writing good songs is hard work! All in
the service of helping the students realize artistic identity, this
class is designed for beginning and experienced songwriters alike. No audition is necessary. This class will be hands-on and
interactive. Students will have the option of performing an original
song in a showcase at the end of the session. Basic knowledge of a
musical instrument is recommended, but not required.
STAGE
ADVENTURES
(ages 5-7)
Join us for an adventure in acting! Students will explore the stage
and learn to channel their imaginations through fun activities that
inspire their natural creativity. Bring your friends, your
imaginations, and get ready to have a great time!!
STAGE PRESENCE FOR SINGERS
(ages 9-15, 16-adult)
Improve your stage presence with this fun and exciting class! Singers will learn to connect to a song both emotionally and
physically. Whether you want to lose your fear when singing in front
of a group of people or you just need to learn what to do with your
body when singing, this class is perfect for you! No previous
singing experience required.
TEENS ACTING
(ages 14-18)
Teens get a taste of professional acting training in
this terrific class. Performers learn to use voice and body in
performance through dynamic games and exercises. Discover
character development through movement, improvisation, and analysis.
Polish acting skills through monologues and scene study. The
class will simulate a professional environment as students learn
about auditioning, blocking, and working with a director.
Finish the year with a showcase of scenes and monologues.
TEEN IDOLS
(ages 12-18)
Imagine singing a song on
stage with your very own back-up singers! This fun class will focus
on teaching you stage presence from 2 different perspectives - (1)
as a soloist and (2) as a back-up singer. Each student will learn 1
solo song and harmonies to sing back-up for his/her peers. Students
will also have an opportunity to showcase their song several times
throughout the year!
THE JAM SESSION
(ages 10 & up)
Beyond the normal
structured setting of a private lesson, this class is all about
bringing what you've learned to the table and learning to integrate
it into improvised songs with other musicians and singers. If
you're really looking to up your game, THIS is the place to be!
VOICES YOUTH CHOIR (ages 9-15)
This choir is a great way for singers to really build
self-confidence and learn performance and team work skills. We
will focus on vocal/performance techniques and light choreography,
all while providing a fun environment for singers to shine!
